Leanne Mitchell wins The Voice UK – Jamie Tuohy

Singing sensation Leanne Mitchell has won The Voice UK, after wowing the nation with her stunning rendition of Whitney Houston’s classic Run to You. The 28-year-old, who was coached by Tom Jones in the competition, beat Bo Bruce and Tyler James to the title, as Holly Willoughby announced her as the series’ winner.

In her first audition, the Suffolk singer impressed the judges with her take on Beyonce’s If I Were A Boy. Over the series, she belted out hits such as Put a Spell on You and Who Knew, but undoubtedly, it was her powerhouse performance of the late diva Whitney Houston’s hit that saw her rise from being the competition’s underdog to the show’s champion. Proving that you don’t have to be a favourite to win, Leanne moved Jessie J to tears with her incomparable and emotionally evocative vocals.

After Holly read her name out as the winner, Leanne was clearly fighting back the tears and said “oh my God, I’m starting to believe in myself now”. The singer’s lack of confidence had been much commented on throughout the series, but surely a record deal with Universal and the triumph of being crowned The Voice UK will help to quash any apprehensions she has about herself.

Bo Bruce opened the show with a fantastic rendition of Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares 2 U, before duetting with her mentor, The Script frontman Danny O’ Donoghue, singing Read All About It. After the performance, Danny went on to say that Bo was his inspiration and Bo then got the chance to sing her favourite song from the series, choosing Charlie Brown, which was met with raucous applause from the audience. Danny commented, saying that she was a “star amongst stars”.

Before being eliminated in the early stages of the final, the show’s most original contestant Vince Kidd got the chance to fight for his place, singing Many Rivers to Cross and went on to duet with his mentor Jessie J on her inspirational track Nobody’s Perfect. Tyler James represented Team Will with his version of Michael Jackson’s I’ll Be There and that was followed by a duet with on Usher’s OMG.  Both performers hovered over the stage in what was an underwhelming performance to say the least, but Tyler managed to save face with his rendition of Higher Love.

However, the night belonged to Leanne; whose vocals outshone her mentor’s when they collaborated on Mama Told Me Not to Come, as Leanne ensued to bring the house down after opening with an unbelievably powerful performance, singing It’s Man’s Man’s World.

The judges’ collaboration was definitely a highlight of the night as they sang each other’s hits and the evening’s proceedings were punctuated with brief appearances from Reggie (who announced the special guests – Ed Sheeran and Maroon 5) and innumerable shots of Holly’s cleavage.

Leanne writes her own music as well as playing the piano and the organ and as Holly and erm, ‘the twins’ announced Leanne as the winner, it was clear that Leanne’s future is looking extremely bright. The star had a record deal at the age of 15 and was on the verge of fame, but a series of knockbacks thwarted her confidence, but with a brand new record deal in the bag and a £100,000 cash prize in her pocket, Leanne Mitchell can be confident in that fact that she has now made it. Congratulations Leanne.
