British funny-man Russell Brand has avoided a six-month prison sentence by agreeing to carry out 20 hours of community service and pay a $500 fine, after throwing a photographer’s iPhone though a window.
The 37-year-old actor and comedian found himself in hot water, following the altercation with the photographer back in March, and was charged on Wednesday with misdemeanour.
It was widely believed that Russell would claim that he was provoked by the paparazzo into hurling his phone through a window of an abandoned building in New Orleans. Brand even jested about the incident on Twitter, tweeting, “Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory.”
Brand’s lawyer entered a not guilty plea on behalf of the star and managed to reach an agreement with the New Orleans State District Attorney which will see Brand working with people who are battling various addictions.
Once Russell pays the fine and has carried out his community service, the case will be dismissed.
