Pippa Middleton launches first book | Jamie Tuohy

When Pippa Middleton walked down the aisle of Westminster Abbey as her sister’s bridesmaid, the 29-year-old younger sibling of the Duchess of Cambridge became an international celebrity, thanks in no small part to a strategically-structured Alexander McQueen gown. And now Pippa has put her assets to good use (not THAT ASSet), by utilising her English degree to launch her first book.

The book, entitled,  The Art of Social Climbing Celebrate: A Year of British Festivities for Families and Friends was inspired by her parents’ party-planning business and in the introduction Pippa acknowledges the source of her fame, writing,

“It’s a bit startling to achieve global recognition (if that’s the right word) before the age of 30, on account of your sister, your brother-in-law and your bottom.”

To launch the guide, the first-time author chose to wear no less than four outfits, resulting in a near-total of £3,000. The event wasn’t attended by her sister, Kate, who was believed to be at home in Anglesey with William, but Pippa’s parents, Carole and Michael and her brother James all showed up to lend their support to their youngest daughter and sister.

Before finding fame-by-association, Pippa worked as a party-planner and edited the newsletter for her parent’s website (how tasking that must have been!), so the book promises to offer all the expertise she has built up over the years.

Pippa received an astonishing £400,000 advance for the book, with publishers tripping over their well-heeled shoes to get Pippa on their books.

Speaking at yesterday’s launch in front of the clamouring press, Pippa said,

“It’s incredibly exciting and I feel really lucky to be in this position to publish a book so that’s great.”

“It has been a crazy couple of years since my sister’s wedding but it’s had its upsides and downsides I just feel really fortunate to be able to build a career as a writer.”

Some of Pippa’s tips in the book include how to make the perfect breakfast, which ranges from making “a cup of tea and digestives, to a fully laden tray.”

There aren’t any references to Pippa’s royal connections in the book, apart from her sharing of some childhood memories with Kate and James, but in the introduction, Pippa elucidates on why she wrote the book, saying,

“I know many of you will pick up the book out of nothing more than curiosity.”

“I can assure you that it feels even stranger to me than it probably does to you to have seen so much written about me when I have done so little to paint a picture of myself.”

“This is my first chance to do that and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”

“The book is designed to be a comprehensive guide to home entertaining, based on my experience in my family’s business Party Pieces and work for London-based events company Table Talk.”

So far, reviews have been mixed, but the book will undoubtedly be the first of many, and a Christmas best-seller, as Pippa endeavours to become a fully-fledged writer. Expect a novel within a year!

William jokes “I hope I don’t have any wardrobe malfunctions” as he and Kate put topless scandal behind them | Jamie Tuohy

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have certainly had an eventful week and as they continued their Royal tour of South-East Asia, they put the ‘topless scandal’ behind them, as they were hoisted up 130-foot tree in Borneo.

Following the distasteful publication of pictures of Kate sunbathing topless, by French rag Closer, the Duchess managed to forget about the scandal by visiting the Danum Valley research centre in Borneo.

The work at the centre is being carried out by the Royal Society, a society of which Prince William is a patron. It is responsible for major conservation work and researches the increasing impact of deforestation, with high-level corruption being one of the main reasons for continued deforesting in Sabah.

Kate managed to look effortlessly glamorous in a casual blouse and khakis, and as she and William waited to be hoisted up a 130-foot tree, her husband joked, “Girls don’t have the same wardrobe malfunctions as men do.  I hope I don’t have any wardrobe malfunctions.”

A source close to the couple said that while they were disgusted with the grotesque actions of the French magazine, they weren’t going to let it impede upon their Royal duties.

‘The Duke and Duchess are hugely disappointed by what has happened but both feel very strongly that it should be business as usual,’ the source said.

‘They feel it has been a great success so far and have thoroughly enjoyed the places they have visited and the people they have met.

‘Even yesterday, when they were reeling from the shock of what happened, their smiles were entirely genuine.

‘They are determined to press ahead and that it should be business as usual.

It’s good to see the Royals giving the disgraceful aforementioned incident the jest it deserves. Nice one William!

Are the Middletons in Hot Water? – Jamie Tuohy

The daughters of Carole and Michael Middleton have been described as ‘Wisteria Sisters’, because they are “highly decorative, terribly fragrant and with a ferocious ability to climb” and thus far, both Kate and Pippa Middleton have proved themselves to be extremely adept at social climbing. One daughter went to university and became the future Queen of England, the other became one of the world’s most sought-after socialites. Nobody could ever accuse the Middletons of failing to relish a challenge and grab EVERY opportunity that comes their way.

When their daughter Kate married Prince William, Carole and Michael wasted no time in selling Royal Wedding memorabilia on the family’s £30million website Party Pieces. Their royal connection meant that the Diamond Jubilee was duly commemorated on the site, but it appears that their latest offering might be a step too far.

Party Pieces has found itself in hot water with Olympics’ organisers, as the site is selling London 2012 paraphernalia, when any items relating to the Olympics are only allowed to be sold by the Games’ official sponsors. While the family have taken care to ensure none of the merchandise actually uses any official symbols or logos, the similarity between the Middleton’s offerings and official products has caused outrage amongst the Games’ organisers.

Locog, the organisers of the 2012 Games, said that they’ll be investigating the products on Party Pieces to see if the Middleton’s have stepped out of line and broke with official protocol. Undoubtedly, this probably wouldn’t even be an issue if Carole and Michael weren’t such a high-profile couple, but the scrutiny is likely to cause embarrassment for Kate, who is an ambassador for the London 2012 Olympics.

Given that the Middleton family haven’t actually used any official logos, do you think it’s fair that they’re being singled out? Or have they exploited one opportunity too many? Leave your comments below!

One is impressed, pet! – Jamie Tuohy

Picture this: The Duchess of Cambridge, Catherine Middleton roaming around the Palace, asking William to ‘SAY MY NAME BABY’ and telling him that she doesn’t need a parachute to fight for their love, all the while shimmying down the hallway with a hairbrush in her hand, singing along to Cheryl’s most famous tracks. Image

An unlikely scene some may say. However, if reports are to believed, then the whole scenario has been afforded a royal dose of credibility. Yes, it has emerged that Kate Middleton is apparently a fan of Cheryl Cole’s music. Okay, Kate probably doesn’t saunter around Buckingham Palace in total abandonment to Chezza’s tunes, but the 29-year-old Geordie singer has received the royal stamp of approval from the Duchess.

Cheryl has revealed that when she met Kate, they bonded over their mutual love of fashion, with Kate telling her how much she loves her music. Cheryl said, “She was incredibly girly and sweet. Kate is really down to earth and we talked about fashion. She said she loved my music”.

This isn’t Cheryl’s first Royal encounter – the star is close pals with Kate’s father-in-law, Prince Charles, having set up a charity with him and Cheryl has made no secret of her love for Prince Harry, saying, “Everybody knows I have a soft spot for Harry. He’s cute. I’ve met him several times and we laugh about it”. The Call My Name singer even went on to say that she and Harry lead similar lives, adding, “It’s a bit of banter between us. He’s so ordinary and a normal 27-year-old who is living in a crazy world and we can bond over that”.

Now maybe I’m jumping the gun a little bit, but is that the sound of prospective wedding bells I hear? I’m envisioning Cheryl and Kate parading around the dancefloor to Under the Sun, as the Queen boogies with Girls Aloud.
